British Construction Industry Awards 2020

Welcome to the British Construction Industry Awards 2020

New Civil Engineer - Welcome

These awards play a critical role in recognising celebrating the achievements of the UK construction industry. This has never been truer than this year with the challenges of Covid-19 but the British construction industry has more than risen to the task.

This year we also introduced a category to recognise the efforts made by the sector to overcome the challenges of the pandemic. The sheer ingenuity of the sector in developing ideas and putting them into action so quickly really encapsulates the potential the sector has and is something that really should be celebrated.

The ongoing pandemic has brought changes to the judging process with site visits replaced with virtual presentations by each of the project teams and the initiatives judges meeting virtually too. What hasn’t changed is the scale of expertise represented by our judging panels who span the entire supply chain from clients, consultants and contractors through to end-users and industry stakeholder groups.

However, even with the changes to the judging process, the integrity and rigorous nature of the judging process has been upheld and we have some very worthy winners who gave the judges a hard time picking a winner this year. Winning a British Construction Industry Award is not an easy task and I’d like to congratulate all of our shortlist this year.

Institution of Civil Engineers - Welcome

The British Construction Industry Awards is the leading event in the UK built environment for recognising excellence in the sector and it is a standout event in the Institution of Civil Engineers’ calendar.

The awards have gained an unrivalled reputation for celebrating world-class projects and innovations that are helping the construction industry to deliver better efficiency for clients and improved outcomes for society as a whole. What really makes these awards stand out is that it is not just mega projects that are recognised here – it is smaller schemes, individual initiatives and localised effort, as well as flagship schemes, that have the chance to shine through.

Having observed these awards for a number of years, it is encouraging to see the shortlisted projects focusing far more on the whole life impact of these projects rather than just the handover of work to the client. Recognising this focus is important to attract new talent into the sector as many young engineers enter the industry keen to make a difference to society – and the construction industry can make a huge difference. I would like to congratulate everybody who’s been shortlisted for this year’s awards. Your work is truly inspiring and is helping to transform UK’s infrastructure for the better.

Paul Sheffield, ICE President 2019-2020
