Innovation Alley
Information
minimass is a design & engineering solution for large-scale construction - a family of patented low-carbon and low-cost structural elements, starting with beams, for large buildings and bridges. This is achieved using 3D concrete printing in an innovative way to minimise the mass of material required, vastly reducing both carbon and cost.
minimass uses the right material, in the right place, for the right purpose - concrete in compression and steel in tension - with no waste. Depending on the specific use case, vs traditional concrete or steel beams, embodied carbon is cut by 50-70% and supply cost by 20-40%, for equivalent performance and proportions.
The design geometry is derived from the applied loads and is then calculated according to standard Eurocode methods to provide code-compliant designs. The first pilot project, an 11m footbridge, was completed in September 2024.
