Brief Overview of Entry
Fauzan Reza Maulana is a Young Tunneller of the Year Candidate representing Mott MacDonald. Across the Asia-Pacific region, he was involved in various tunnelling projects from tender to detailed design with values of up to SGD3.6 billion.
He has contributed three international publications regarding the underground, as well as several youth seminars regarding the introduction to the tunnelling industry.
Fauzan has also built data-driven and automated tunnel design workflows within Mott MacDonald saving hundreds of man-hours.
Long Description of Entry
Fauzan Reza Maulana is a Young Tunneller of the Year Candidate for the New Civil Engineer Tunnelling Festival 2020 representing Mott MacDonald. He offers his three pillars - Projects, Profile, and Products - to fulfill the requirement of the award which is to drive teams to success, deliver beyond clients’ expectations, improve the tunnelling industry, and make tangible differences to their environment.
From January 2019 to June 2020, Fauzan has worked on several underground projects each with their own sets of challenges. At the start of 2019, he took on responsibility as a project coordinator for tunnels in the Trunk Road T2 and Cha Kwo Ling Tunnel design-and-bid build in Hong Kong. The project scopes the design and construction of dual two lane tunnels, each 3.1km in length, ranging from cut-and-cover, sub-sea TBM, drill-and-break, and drill-and-blast methods. The job entailed a coordination of more than 100 people across 8 offices and 3 continents to produce 100 tender drawings. Fauzan was also involved in the schematic design of the Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 5, where he was responsible for the design of 25 hectares of the site’s tunnel and basement excavations. In early 2020, he played a critical part for Mott MacDonald in the implementation of a BIM-integrated tunnel design workflow for Singapore’s Cross Island Line MRT design-and-build bids. For most of 2020, he was the senior tunnel engineer for the Jakarta MRT CP201 detailed bored tunnel design.
On top of project involvement, Fauzan is very active in the tunnelling community, both internally within his company and externally. Within Mott MacDonald, he was the Early Career Professional Lead for the East Asia Tunnel Practice, as well as an active contributor in the East Asia Digital Practice. These roles ensure that the tunnelling practice strives to better itself through resource development, organization of knowledge, and innovation for practice. He was also an active youth member of the Tunnelling Underground Construction Society of Singapore, where he helped organise seminars to help fellow youths understand the tunnelling industry. Internationally, he had contributed 3 publications each within the underground practice, ranging from TBM performance, ground treatment, and computational design for excavations.
In support of his tunnelling work, Fauzan has an aptitude for scripting and automation. He has leveraged his understanding of Building Information Modelling concepts to build tools and workflows that has saved the tunnelling team an immense amount of design time. The foundation of the BIM-integrated workflow is the shift to using a 3D model for all tunnel designs, enabling easier extraction of alignment information as well as the federation of other important 3D models. This high fidelity with the tunnel alignment data was used for the creation of chainage-iterated design tools, such as for the tunnel lining design and the TBM face pressure calculation. Downstream of the design workflow, he also built a parametric tool for bored tunnel lining drawings which ensures accuracy, consistency and speed of drawing production. All of the tools were built in service of the projects that Fauzan was involved in between January 2019 and June 2020.
