Improving water quality from highway stormwater runoff

Improving water quality from highway stormwater runoff

Presentation

Information

Runoff from motorways and highways is highly polluted with contaminants such as heavy metals and hydrocarbons which, if left untreated, has detrimental impacts on the surrounding natural environment and pollutes our water courses.

Many existing outfalls have little or no treatment prior to discharge and require solutions to either improve what is there or to retrofit new measures. Nature based solutions and infrastructure are crucial to combat this issue, however when space is often a significant constraint, engineered solutions can be employed to work in tandem with nature to maximise efficiencies of treatment.
