Information

Low productivity and maintenance costs remain key priorities for the roads sectors, as it looks to also meet the challenge of carbon reduction. What can be done to improve productivity onsite? How can the supply chain support improvements in asset life? What can the sector do to reduce it’s carbon footprint?

Concrete CanvasWho is Concrete Canvas Ltd? Based in South Wales, Concrete Canvas Ltd. is the manufacturer of three award-winning products, including Concrete Canvas® (CC). Concrete Canvas Ltd. products are a lower carbon alternative to conventional concretes. Since the company’s incorporation in 2005, they have been supplied to over 80 countries and used successfully in extreme environmental conditions. What is Concrete Canvas®? CC is part of revolutionary material class called Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mats (GCCMs) and is used to replace conventional concrete for erosion control and weed suppression applications. CC is a flexible, concrete filled geosynthetic which provides a thin and durable concrete layer when hydrated. Typically, 10-times faster to install than conventional concrete solutions; essentially, it’s Concrete on a Roll™. The product is now BBA certified with a durability in excess of 120 years for erosion control and weed suppression applications. How is Concrete Canvas® used in the highways sector? Concrete Canvas® has been used in the highways sector for over ten years. CC has been installed as part of new highway construction schemes as well as for remediation of existing assets. CC has been specified by clients including Highways England, SWTRA and the NMTRA. Design consultants find specification of CC simple as it is listed within the Manual of Contract Documents for Highways Works (MCHW). Framework contractors are able to install CC without requiring specialist training.  How is Concrete Canvas® used in the rail sector? CC has been widely used by Network Rail across the UK for over ten years and is an industry accepted alternative to conventional concrete. The material has been specified by Route Directors, Senior Asset Engineers (Drainage) and minor works teams across the five Network Rail regions.  The material has been extensively used through CP4, CP5 and CP6. CC has been installed by the majority of route network framework contractors including QTS, BAM Nuttall, Costain, AmcoGiffen, Alun Griffiths and Story Contracting.
